Education Program

Read Horn of Africa USA and partner organizations are currently running a primary and secondary schools that serve over one thousand children in the central Somali town of Bursalah. Located near the Somali-Ethiopian border, Bursalah was strategically chosen to serve rural and nomadic communities that have been neglected by both governmental and non-governmental organizations alike. Bursalah is also home to many internally displaced communities (IDP's) that fled conflicts in southern Somalia.

Our educational program is the first ever in these communities and our activities range from construction of schools to training teachers and capacity building for community education committees to manage their education system. We also provide textbooks, school meals, and lodging facilities to the most vulnerable children in the community.

Our non-formal education for children, youth and adults also include life-saving information on hygiene, nutrition, health and protection. With over one thousand students and forty staff members, Bursalah School is entirely community driven initiative and is recognized as one of the best schools in the region.
